General information only
Workshop Basics publishes general information about home workshops. It is not professional advice and is not tailored to your circumstances. The author is a DIY and workshop writer with no trade qualifications, and the guides should be read in that light.
Your safety is your responsibility
- Always read and follow the manufacturer's instructions for any tool, machine, product or protective equipment. Where our guides and a manual differ, follow the manual.
- Use guards, riving knives, push sticks and other safety devices as designed. Never remove or bypass them.
- Wear suitable eye, hearing and respiratory protection.
- Only attempt tasks you are confident you can do safely. If in doubt, ask someone experienced or hire a professional.
Electrical work
Our electrical safety guide explains general principles and when building regulations apply. It is not a guide to carrying out electrical installation work. Work on fixed wiring, consumer units and new circuits should be carried out by a registered electrician. Rules differ between England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Hazardous materials
Do not sand, cut or drill materials that may contain asbestos or lead paint. Seek professional advice; the Health and Safety Executive publishes guidance on both.
Regulations change
Safety guidance, standards and regulations change over time. We review our guides regularly, but you should check current official guidance before relying on any legal or regulatory point. Our sources page lists the organisations to check.
