About Workshop Basics
An independent, plain-English guide to home workshops in UK garages and sheds.
Workshop Basics exists to answer the questions people have when they first try to turn a garage, shed or spare room into a working space. How high should the bench be? Which tools are worth buying first? Is a dust mask enough? Can I wire the shed myself? The answers are scattered across forums, manuals and regulations; we try to gather them into clear guides that explain the reasoning as well as the conclusion.
What we cover
Our guides cover planning the space, choosing tools, safety and protective equipment, dust control, electrical safety, workbenches, storage, measuring, sharpening, fixings and tool care. The focus is hobby woodwork, general DIY and household repairs in UK homes.
Who writes it
The guides are written by Tom Haldane, a DIY and workshop writer. He is not trade-qualified, and the site does not claim professional expertise. Practical advice comes from hands-on use; safety and legal points are checked against official UK sources such as the Health and Safety Executive and government building regulations guidance. Our sources page lists them.
What we do not do
- We do not sell tools or anything else.
- We do not carry advertising, sponsored posts or affiliate links.
- We do not endorse brands or rank products.
- We do not give personalised advice on electrical installations, structural work or hazardous materials. Those need a qualified professional who can see the job.
How the site is funded
Workshop Basics is currently run without any income from advertisers, manufacturers or retailers. If that ever changes, we will say so clearly, as set out in our advertising disclosure and affiliate disclosure.
