Content standards
What every guide on this site has to meet before it is published.
Accuracy first
Facts are checked against primary sources as described in our fact-checking process. Uncertain points are left out, not guessed at.
Safety framing
- Every guide that involves cutting tools, machinery, dust, chemicals or electricity mentions the relevant protective measures, and links to our safety and PPE guide where helpful.
- We never suggest removing or bypassing guards, safety switches or RCDs.
- We say clearly when a job should be done by a qualified professional, such as an electrician.
No endorsements
We describe features to look for and how to check them. We do not name preferred brands, rank products or link to retailers. Where a product category is commonly known by a trade name, we use the generic term instead.
Clear, honest writing
- Plain English, with technical terms explained when first used.
- No invented statistics, testimonials or quotes.
- No claims of professional qualifications we do not hold.
- Metric units, with imperial equivalents where they are still in common use, such as screw gauges.
Images
Images illustrate the topic. They may be computer generated and do not show specific products, real workshops or real people. Where an image could be mistaken for showing a safety technique, the text, not the picture, is the guide.
Accessibility
Pages use clear headings, descriptive link text and alternative text on images, and tables are used for data rather than layout. If something on the site is hard to use, please tell us at [email protected].
Our wider approach is set out in the editorial policy.
